AI PDF Split: Using the PDF Splitter

Renamed.to's AI PDF Split turns massive PDF bundles into organized individual files. The AI automatically identifies document boundaries, generates intelligent filenames, and splits your PDFs in seconds. It's ideal when you need a fast, accurate AI PDF split for invoices, bank statements, and receipts.

Renamed.to's AI PDF Split automatically separates large PDF bundles into clean, searchable documents in just a few clicks.

  • Upload one or many PDFs up to 100MB each.
  • Let AI PDF Split detect document boundaries and generate descriptive filenames.
  • Download individual PDFs or a zipped folder ready to file, share, or export.

Proof: Teams replace hour-long manual splitting with a 2–3 minute AI PDF split workflow.

How AI PDF Split Works

The AI PDF splitter in Renamed.to uses AI to analyze your documents and intelligently identify where one document ends and another begins. The process happens in five stages:

1

Reading PDF Structure

Extracts text from each page and analyzes document layout, headers, footers, and metadata to understand the document structure.

2

Analyzing Content

AI examines content patterns to detect natural document boundaries—invoice numbers, dates, section headings, or other distinguishing features based on your instructions.

3

Naming Files

Generates descriptive, searchable filenames for each split based on content analysis. Each split includes a reason explaining why it was created at that boundary.

4

Splitting Documents

Creates individual PDF files at the identified boundaries, preserving the original quality and formatting of your documents.

5

Uploading Results

Stores split PDFs securely for download. Files are available for 24 hours, then automatically deleted from our servers.

The AI identifies natural document boundaries with 95%+ accuracy. Processing times vary based on document complexity, but most jobs complete within 1-3 minutes. You can process 100+ page documents that would take hours to separate manually.

Uploading Files

Upload PDFs by dragging them onto the upload area or clicking to browse. Multiple files are supported for batch processing.

File Requirements

  • • PDF files only (maximum 100 MB per file)
  • • Multiple files supported for batch processing
  • • Page count displayed after upload
  • • Credit estimate shown before processing
  • • Searchable PDFs work best; scanned documents use OCR (300+ DPI recommended)

Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Please export an unprotected copy first. Scanned PDFs work best with clear, high-resolution images.

AI PDF Split mode (Recommended)

AI PDF Split mode is the primary splitting method. It analyzes document content to intelligently detect where one document ends and another begins, then generates descriptive filenames for each split.

The AI looks for patterns that indicate document changes: invoice numbers, date shifts, section headings, or other distinguishing features. You can guide this detection with custom instructions or use our preset recipes. Each AI PDF split includes a reason explaining why the AI split at that location, helping you understand and verify the results.

Custom AI Instructions

Custom instructions give you complete control over how PDFs are split and named. Write natural language instructions that the AI follows to detect boundaries and create filenames.

Basic Example

Split when you see a new invoice number.
Name each file as "Invoice [number] from [company].pdf"
If no invoice number found, use "Invoice [date].pdf"

Result: Invoice 2025-001 from Acme Corp.pdf

Multi-Type Documents

For bank statements: Split by month, include account last 4 digits
For invoices: Split by vendor, include invoice number
For receipts: Split individually, include amount and vendor

Advanced Example

Split at page breaks where the next page has a new date in the header.
If amount > $1000, add "LARGE_" prefix to filename.
For recurring invoices, add "RECURRING_" prefix.
Name format: [Prefix][Date]_[Vendor]_[InvoiceNumber].pdf

Result: LARGE_2025-01-15_Acme_INV-001.pdf

Writing Effective Instructions

  • Be specific about boundaries: Clearly describe what marks the start of a new document
  • Describe naming clearly: Tell the AI exactly what information to include and in what order
  • Handle edge cases: Describe what to do when information is missing
  • Use examples: Show the AI what you want with example filenames
  • Test first: Try your instructions with 2-3 files before processing large batches

Common patterns:

Date formats: YYYY-MM-DD (ISO), DD.MM.YYYY (European), MM-DD-YYYY (US)

Separators: Underscores (_) most compatible, hyphens (-) readable

Conditional: "If amount > $1000, add LARGE prefix"

Manual Mode

For when you need precise control or AI can't detect the pattern, manual mode lets you visually select exactly where to split a PDF using page thumbnails.

When to Use Manual Mode

  • • Scanned documents with inconsistent formatting where AI struggles
  • • Personal documents without clear business logic
  • • Precise control needed and you know exactly where splits should occur
  • • Visual verification is important before splitting

How It Works

  1. 1. Upload a single PDF file (manual mode only works with one file at a time)
  2. 2. Switch to Manual mode in the configuration panel
  3. 3. Load thumbnails to see a visual preview of all pages
  4. 4. Click between page thumbnails to mark split boundaries
  5. 5. Click "Start splitting" to process with your manual boundaries

Single file only: Manual mode requires exactly one PDF file. For batch processing of multiple PDFs, use AI mode instead.

Templates

Templates let you save your complete configuration—split mode, AI instructions, and settings—for instant reuse. Perfect for recurring tasks like monthly invoice processing or quarterly statement batches.

What Gets Saved

  • • Split mode (AI or manual)
  • • AI instructions/custom prompt
  • • Selected recipe (if any)

After processing, click the save icon to store your current configuration. Give it a descriptive name like "Monthly Invoices" or "Bank Statements." Select any saved template from the dropdown in the upload zone to instantly apply all settings.

Account required: Templates require a free account. Templates sync across all your devices.

Credits & Pricing

PDF splitting uses a simple, transparent credit system based on the total number of pages you process.

1 credit per 3 pages (rounded up)

The total page count across all uploaded PDFs is used to calculate credits. For example, if you upload three PDFs with 10, 15, and 5 pages, that's 30 total pages = 10 credits.

PagesCreditsCalculation
1-31⌈3 ÷ 3⌉ = 1
4-62⌈6 ÷ 3⌉ = 2
3010⌈30 ÷ 3⌉ = 10
10034⌈100 ÷ 3⌉ = 34

Anonymous Users

Get 10 free splits per session without creating an account. A 7-day cookie tracks your usage. No credit card required. Perfect for trying the feature.

Authenticated Users

Credits are deducted from your account balance based on actual page count. Credit check happens before processing (no partial charges). Save templates for repeated tasks.

Your credit estimate is shown immediately after upload and before processing. You can review the cost and remove files if needed before clicking "Start splitting."

Processing & Downloading

Real-Time Progress

Once you click Start splitting, you'll see real-time progress through five stages. Processing times vary based on document complexity, but most jobs complete within 1-3 minutes. You can cancel processing at any time.

Results Panel

When processing completes, you'll see a 3-column layout: original files on the left, all splits in the center (grouped by source file, showing page ranges and filenames), and a PDF preview on the right. Hover over splits to see the AI's explanation for each boundary decision.

Downloading

Click the download icon next to any split to download it immediately with its generated filename. Or click Download All to get all splits in a single ZIP archive organized by original filename.

File retention: Processed files are available for download for 24 hours, then automatically deleted from our servers. Original files are never modified.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use clear, searchable PDFs. Documents with selectable text produce the best results. For scanned documents, ensure at least 300 DPI resolution.
  • Start with AI mode and recipes. Preset recipes work well for most documents without any configuration. Only use custom prompts when you need specific rules.
  • Test custom prompts with small batches. Try your instructions with 2-3 representative files before processing hundreds of pages. This saves credits and ensures results match expectations.
  • Save templates for recurring tasks. If you process the same type of documents regularly, save a template. One click applies all your settings for future batches.
  • Check credit estimates before processing. Review the estimate shown after upload. Remove any unnecessary files before starting.
  • Use manual mode for edge cases. When AI struggles with inconsistent formatting or you need precise control, switch to manual mode for visual split point selection.
  • Group similar documents together. Process invoices separately from bank statements for more consistent naming. Create separate templates for each document type.
  • Review split reasons for quality. Hover over splits in the results panel to see the AI's explanation for each boundary decision.
